Since Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt started streaming on Netflix on March 5th, I have been glued to my Roku player. The show is lighthearted, witty and fun. Created and written by 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, Kimmy Schmidt, has Fey’s humor and wit written all over her face so if you were a fan of 30 Rock and SNL you will love Kimmy Schmidt. The premise is simple: Kimmy Schmidt, along with three other women, have been living in an underground bunker as part of doomsday cult in Indiana for the past 15 years. Kimmy and the other women are rescued in the opening scene of the series premiere. During an interview on the TODAY Show Kimmy has a revelation and opts to stay in New York City to reinvent herself. The show takes off from there; Kimmy finds an apartment, gains a roommate, gets a job, etc. The cast (Ellie Kemper of The Office, Jane Krakowski of 30 Rock and Tituss Burgess of 30 Rock, to name a few) is superb and the characters are memorable to say the least. You must add it to your queue.
Kimmy Schmidt isn’t exactly appropriate for the littles in your household so here are a few suggestions from Netflix with the theme of resilience and reinventing oneself for the better:
1. Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
3. The Emperor’s New Groove
4. Angelina Ballerina: Pop Star Girls
1. Mr. Peabody & Sherman
2. The Perfect Game
4. Avengers Assemble
Laura, her husband, James, and I recently spent a weekend together and basically binge-watched Kimmy Schmidt. That’s what I love about Netflix; binge-watching and not having to wait a week until the next episode. The jokes in Kimmy Schmidt are fast and sometimes very subtle so it’s a TV show you really can watch repeatedly and notice something new.
Have you watched Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt yet? Or has there been a time when you’ve tried to reinvent yourself?
