Prefolds are a wonderful cloth diaper option, especially when you’re on a tight budget. Not all prefolds are created equal, which is why I’m happy to introduce you to Smart Bottoms’ Smartfold Organic Prefold. This super absorbent prefold is made of a blend of certified organic cotton and hemp. Smartfolds come in three sizes: small (fits 6-16lbs / retails $7.00), medium (fits 8-24lbs / $7.50 ), and large (24lbs + / $8.00).

First Impressions: To facilitate this review I received a small Smartfold. The first thing I noticed was its softness. I wanted to cozy up with this prefold, it was that soft! I also noticed that the Smartfold is quite trim.

Prepping: The prepping instructions are as follows, “Prep diaper before first use by washing 6-8 times.” Wow, 6-8 times seems like a lot! Then I spent some time on the Smart Bottoms FaceBook group “The Smarty Pants.” There people confirmed that so much prepping is required because Smart Botttoms products are made with certified organic materials. The Smart Bottom fans also raved about the products, that they are well worth all the prepping time. While prepping I just added my Smartfold to my regular diaper laundry (after the presoak cycle). A couple of times I threw it in with my towels. I use detergent with no fragrances or softeners so adding my unused Smartfold to the regular laundry was no problem. This also made the prepping go faster. I did not necessarily let the diaper dry completely between prepping cycles. As I prepped the diaper I noticed its softness improved. To ensure that my Smartfold was fully prepped I tested it by pouring a little water on it to see if it would absorb instantly. After seven washes my Smartf oldwas fully prepped.

Smartfold as a Nighttime Diaper

Performance: I was very pleased with the Smartfold’s performance as both a daytime and nighttime diapering solution and it worked great in all the covers in my stash. During the day I used it as a trifold or “pad fold.” (See this helpful graphic from Kelly’s Closet.) At night I like to use an “angel fold” secured with a Snappi for more coverage. Since the size small is recommended for babies weighing 6-16lbs and my boy was 20lbs when we tested the Smartfold the “angel fold” was a bit of a tight fit; however, it stayed secure all night. Between the cover and Smartfold I added a Smart Bottoms Hemp Insert for extra absorbency. We had no leaks overnight. In the morning the Smartfold was completely saturated and the hemp insert was damp, but my boy’s skin was not irritated at all. No leaks and a happy bum in the morning, I call that a night diapering success!

Another thing I love about the Smartfold is the company behind it, Smart Bottoms. My sister and founder of First Time Mom, Bert, is Smart Bottoms’ Social Media & Brand Content Director. All Smart Bottoms products are 100% sourced and made in the U.S. I have yet to meet a Smart Bottoms product I didn’t absolutely love and I give the Smartfold an enthusiastic thumbs up!
