You’re stuck sitting down in a comfy chair doing what you’re body’s meant to do – feed your baby. It’s a great bonding experience but at times you can feel a little like you’re tethered to a non-productive state of time and that can drive you crazy. Rather than pulling up your favorite social media platform I challenge you to pick up a book and read. Yes read a good book. Not sure where to start? I’ll help you dive into a few of my favorites during the next couple weeks.

Good Books to Read While You’re Breastfeeding: A WRINKLE IN TIME

First up is my favorite book A Wrinkle In Time and lucky for you, there’s a live action film coming out March 3rd, 2018, so there you have a deadline if you’re like me and are one of those “read the book before the movie” kind of people. The book is an easy read for an adult as it’s technically a young adult novel. With themes of good versus evil and unconditional love wins over darkness, there are a ton of applicable themes to pick up on. This novel is what spurred my love for science fiction.

The novel is still one of the most frequently banned novels in schools, as parents felt, “the story’s face-off between good and evil reflected badly on religion.

What about the movie?

Yes, there’s a film coming out in March and to date it’s the first live action film that will rightly be able to do justice to the worlds that L’Engle created in 1963. The Disney film has already been heralded by TIME Magazine as the “movie that will change Hollywood”.

Directed by Oscar® nominee Ava DuVernay from a screenplay by Oscar winner Jennifer Lee based upon the beloved novel by Madeleine L’Engle, “A Wrinkle in Time” stars: two-time Academy Award® nominee Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, Emmy® nominee Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Mrs. Murry, Michael Peňa as Red and introducing Storm Reid as Meg Murry, with two-time Emmy winner Zach Galifianakis as The Happy Medium and Emmy nominee Chris Pine as Mr. Murry.

Themes in A Wrinkle In Time

  • Good vs. Evil – The setting in the book is a universe where good and evil are clashing as they try to overtake the planets and the inhabitants of those planets. Mr. Murray, the main character’s father, is a scientist who has discovered a special form of multi-dimensional space travel called a tesseract. He vanishes during one of his experiments and the children, Meg, his daughter, Calvin, a classmate of Meg’s, and Charles Wallace, Meg’s youngest, brilliant brother, set on a journey to find the scientist.
  • The Power of Love – Unconditional love plays a major role in the novel and one of the strongest points is the love that Meg feels for her father.
  • Individuality – If you’ve seen the trailer for the film there’s a scene where children in a neighborhood all dressed alike stand at the end of their driveways and bounce a ball in unison. Then actress Bellamy Young looks at the camera and speaks. It’s eerie and it’s meant to be.

Book Synopsis

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.

“Wild nights are my glory,” the unearthly stranger told them. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract”.

Meg’s father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. But can they outwit the forces of evil they will encounter on their heart-stopping journey through space?
